Oroxylin A is a naturally occurring flavonoid (5,7-dihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone) derived from plants such as Scutellaria baicalensis. It is under research for diverse biological effects. Immunomodulatory studies have shown that Oroxylin A can protect immune cells from hyperactivation: for example, in macrophages stimulated with poly(I:C) (a mimic of viral RNA), Oroxylin A prevented the loss of cell viability and excessive nitric oxide production. It also inhibited the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1α/β, IL-6, TNF-α, GM-CSF, and others in these immune cells. In cancer models, Oroxylin A (10–20 μM) reduced the migration and invasion of breast (MCF-7), prostate (DU145), and liver (HepG2) cancer cells under hypoxic conditions. Additionally, Oroxylin A has been identified as an inhibitor of drug-metabolizing enzymes UGT1A1 and P-glycoprotein, which suggests it can affect the pharmacokinetics of other compounds. These early findings highlight Oroxylin A’s potential anti-inflammatory, anti-metastatic, and drug-interaction properties, though further studies (including in vivo investigations) are needed to fully understand its therapeutic promise.
