Bacteriostatic Water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water for injection that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) as a bacteriostatic preservative. The presence of benzyl alcohol allows repeated withdrawals from a single vial without contamination, extending the vial’s usability for up to 28 days after opening. After 28 days, any unused solution should be discarded, as the preservative’s efficacy diminishes. Bacteriostatic water is distinct from sterile water for injection, which contains no preservative; consequently, sterile water vials are single-use only and must be discarded after one withdrawal to prevent microbial growth. Bacteriostatic water is commonly used to reconstitute medications for injection, providing a safe, multi-dose diluent that inhibits bacterial growth.
