PRL-8-53 is an investigational nootropic compound officially known as methyl 3-(2-(benzyl(methyl)amino)ethyl)benzoate hydrochloride. It is a synthetic molecule derived from benzoic acid and phenethylamine structures. PRL-8-53 gained attention after a small human study (1970s) suggested improvements in short-term memory and recall. It is thought to modulate neurotransmitter systems—possibly cholinergic and dopaminergic—although its exact mechanism of action remains unknown. In animal tests, PRL-8-53 did not act as a stimulant at tested doses and did not potentiate amphetamine, but it showed memory-enhancing properties. Human data are very limited; a single trial reported better word retention 24 hours post-ingestion compared to placebo. PRL-8-53 is unregulated and not approved as a medicine; however, it is used in research and by hobbyists under the premise of a cognitive enhancer.
