Description

Oleoylethanolamide is an endogenous fatty acid amide – specifically the ethanolamide of oleic acid – that functions as a lipid signaling molecule. In the body, OEA is produced in the small intestine and regulates appetite and energy balance. It is a potent agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α). By activating PPAR-α in peripheral tissues, OEA increases lipid metabolism and sends satiety signals to the brain, leading to reduced food intake. In animal studies, OEA administration has been shown to decrease meal size and frequency, resulting in weight loss and improved lipid profiles. OEA also has anti-inflammatory effects; activation of PPAR-α by OEA can inhibit NF-κB signaling, thereby reducing production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, OEA may interact with TRPV1 receptors (transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1), which contributes to its pain-modulating and metabolic effects. Importantly, OEA has been reported to improve insulin sensitivity and hepatic fat metabolism in obese rodent models. As a naturally occurring compound, OEA is considered safe and is being explored as a nutraceutical or therapeutic agent for obesity, metabolic syndrome, and intestinal inflammation. It does not raise heart rate or blood pressure (unlike some stimulants) because its action is primarily through peripheral PPAR-α pathways in the gut and liver
