Description
Description
Huperzine A is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and NMDA-receptor antagonist extracted from the club moss Huperzia serrata. As a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, it increases acetylcholine levels in the synapses, which has led to interest in Huperzine A as a potential cognitive enhancer and neuroprotective agent. It has been investigated for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease – some studies showed improved memory and cognition in patients, though evidence remains inconclusive and insufficient for formal medical recommendation (as of 2013)
Huperzine A also crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, which may help reduce excitotoxic neuronal damage. Despite its promise, long-term safety data are limited. It is available as a dietary supplement purported to improve memory and mental function, but regulatory agencies have not approved it as a definitive therapy for any condition. Caution is advised due to its potent cholinergic activity. (Notably, the purity of Huperzine A extracts can vary; the product here is a 0.4% Huperzine A natural extract.)
