Description

Dehydroepiandrosterone is an endogenous steroid hormone and one of the most abundant circulating steroids in humans (primarily in its sulfated form, DHEA-S). It is produced mainly by the adrenal cortex, with smaller amounts made in the gonads and brain. DHEA is a metabolic precursor to both androgens and estrogens – it can be converted into testosterone, estradiol, and other sex hormones in peripheral tissues. Beyond serving as a prohormone, DHEA has intrinsic biological activity: it binds to several nuclear receptors (including androgen receptor weakly) and may interact with neurotransmitter receptors (earning it classification as a neurosteroid as well). Physiologically, DHEA/DHEA-S levels peak in early adulthood and then exhibit a well-documented age-related decline; this has prompted extensive research into DHEA supplementation as an “anti-aging” strategy. Some epidemiological studies linked higher DHEA-S levels to reduced incidence of cardiovascular disease, better immune function, and improved bone density. However, randomized trials of DHEA supplementation in older adults have shown mixed results – some indicating improved well-being, libido, or skin health, and others showing minimal or no benefit.
