Description

Citicoline (cytidine-5’-diphosphocholine) is a neuroprotective nootropic compound that serves as an essential intermediate in phospholipid metabolism. Once administered, citicoline breaks down into cytidine and choline; these components cross the blood-brain barrier and are used by neurons to synthesize phosphatidylcholine for cell membranes and to boost acetylcholine production. Citicoline has been shown to enhance neuronal membrane repair, reduce cell death after ischemic injury, and improve neuroplasticity. Mechanistically, it increases brain glucose metabolism and cerebral blood flow, partly by stimulating mitochondrial function and possibly raising nitric oxide levels in cerebral vasculature.
